Module Section 13.3 (day1)
This module will cover a lesson on graphing parabolas
Introduction:
In this section we will be graphing parabolas from scratch. The parts of a parabola that we will be studying are:
- finding the vertex of the parabola
- by completing the square
- and also by using the Vertex Formula
- deciding whether the vertex is a minimum or maximum
- finding the x-intercepts (and deciding whether they exist)
- finding the y-intercept
- finding and graphing the line (axis) of symmetry
- stating the domain of the parabola
- stating the range of the parabola
- and finally, using the above information to graph the parabola
Example 1
This example will introduce graphing parabolas and the vertex form for quadratics
The following example was done using a Livescribe Smart Pen:
*For best results hit "full screen" and choose the first option, on the bottom right hand side, that shows a blank screen at the beginning so the writing will show up only as the words are spoken.
Here is a link to the pencast
Example 2
This example will show graphing parabolas in the vertex form
The following example was done using a Livescribe Smart Pen:
*For best results hit "full screen" and choose the first option, on the bottom right hand side, that shows a blank screen at the beginning so the writing will show up only as the words are spoken.
Here is a link to the pencast
Example 3
This example will introduce writing a quadratic equation in vertex form by completing the square
The following example was done using a Livescribe Smart Pen:
*For best results hit "full screen" and choose the first option, on the bottom right hand side, that shows a blank screen at the beginning so the writing will show up only as the words are spoken.
Here is the link to the pencast
Example 4
This example will introduce writing a quadratic equation in vertex form, by completing the square, when there is a leading coefficient other than 1
The following example was done using a Livescribe Smart Pen:
*For best results hit "full screen" and choose the first option, on the bottom right hand side, that shows a blank screen at the beginning so the writing will show up only as the words are spoken.
Here is a link to the pencast
Example 5
This example will introduce writing a quadratic equation in vertex form, by completing the square, when there is a leading coefficient other than 1
The following example was done using a Livescribe Smart Pen:
*For best results hit "full screen" and choose the first option, on the bottom right hand side, that shows a blank screen at the beginning so the writing will show up only as the words are spoken.
Here is a link to the pencast
Example 6
In this example we will put a quadratic equation in vertex form, by completing the square, when there is a leading coefficient other than 1. I used a document camera (my newest tech tool) to record this video. Here is the link to view this Quicktime Movie. Sorry about recording it at an angle! I will get better at this as I practice more :) (hopefully!)

You should now be ready to go to the homework for 13.3 (day 1) on My Math Lab. If you need more examples, read through the online text and try some of their examples before going on. PLEASE practice completing the square in this part of the section. We will use the book's method in 13.3 (day 2) - the vertex formula. You WILL be tested on both methods for finding the vertex. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
